I still cannot believe my sister is gone. When it happened, I didn't even know she had been arrested. I didn’t know she was in Rikers. I didn’t even know there was an issue of bail. If I had known these things, I would have paid that $500, and my sister would still be alive today. My family has experienced firsthand the injustice of cash bail and pretrial jailing.
For decades, the communities most impacted by mass incarceration and advocates have fought to change the unjust bail laws that put our loved ones in jail while they await trial. Finally, last year, New York passed a bail reform law that. The law went into effect on January 1, 2020, and it worked as intended — fewer people were ending up in jail.: people who did not have to suffer the trauma of pretrial detention.
