New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that the state’s number of coronavirus deaths and hospitalizations, along with patients admitted to intensive care units or intubated has gone down, but it is “too early” to tell the significance of the reduced numbers.Cuomo added that the number of deaths has been dropping over the past few days.
Cuomo said the number of hospitalizations has also declined, from 1,095 on Friday to 574 on Saturday. The number of patients needing intensive care or a ventilator has also gone down, but Cuomo said “it’s too early to tell” the significance of these data points. “We can’t do this day to day,” we “need three or four days” of decreasing numbers to tell whether a downward trend is taking place, Cuomo said.
The major problem that remains is a ventilator and staffing shortage, Cuomo said, and disclosed that the state is working on a “surge and flex” system to get every public and private hospital working together, which he said has never been done before.“We are running short of supplies all across the board,” Cuomo said, adding that the statewide number of cases has been relatively stable over the past few days. “The challenge that remains is operationally impossible.
