Pines fueled CV's 33-20 victory over Altoona
Cumberland Valley’s Caiden Pines returns the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown against Harrisburg in high school football at Chapman Field, Friday, September 22, 2023. Paul Chaplin | Special to PennLiveCumberland Valley is a glowing endorsement for scheduling rough when it comes to early non-conference opponents.
Three of the state’s toughest 6A programs, Manheim Township, Central York and Spring-Ford, all exposed the Eagles’ weak points to open the year. Cumberland Valley was outscored 112-23 in three-game session, and most believed the climb back to .500 and a potential postseason berth was a task too tall.Slowly, the Eagles started to lean on their veterans to turn momentum. One of those veterans, three-year starter and captain Caiden Pines, helped lead the way.
CV defeated Altoona 33-20 in the final week of the regular season, extending the team’s winning streak to five games. That terrific run shored up that postseason bid. Pines grabbed a 51-yard TD reception and returned a kickoff 91 yards to the house vs. the Mountain Lions. The performance earned the largest chunk of votes in PennLive’s MPC player of the week poll, with Pines outlasting Newport RB Dalton Kratzer for the top honor.Adryce Arp, CD East – 3,124
