“Sorry. Riley Williams was old enough, tall enough to be held accountable for her actions,” Judge Amy Jackson said Thursday at the Mechanicsburg woman’s sentencing hearing.
The 22-year-old woman from Mechanicsburg did not steal Nancy Pelosi’s laptop on Jan. 6, 2021.
Williams has indicated she wishes to begin a pastoral life with a newfound religious devotion, now free of the social media addiction she said she had when she joined the march on the U.S. Capitol. On the flip side, Lori Ulrich, Williams’ attorney, argued that Jackson should give Williams a one-year, one-day sentence in consideration of the “hell” that was her house arrest, mostly deflecting blame to powerful and influential figures while minimizing Williams’ role as exaggerated by the woman herself. Jackson didn’t suffer that idea, either. The United States Capitol Building is positioned within view of the E.
Dalke characterized Williams as a focal point of the riots and called her among the worst of the Capitol riot defendants. Ulrich characterized Williams as a young and impressionable “follower” who was led astray by people such as Nick Fuentes, who made millions from the “Stop the Steal” narrative about the 2020 election as well as former president Donald Trump. This was made worse by a lack of good role models at home to counteract the influence of “powerful and influential men,” Ulrich said.
“This went well beyond a peaceful protest,” Jackson said. “She said it best. There is no justification or excuse for her actions.” Ulrich referred back to testimony by Jonathan Lund, the FBI agent who investigated Williams, who told a grand jury in June of 2021 that there was no reason to think Williams stole Pelosi’s laptop—and that prosecutors pushed forward on that charge regardless.
