Scammers are calling residents posing as the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, attempting to trick them into redial a hidden number. Authorities urge residents to hang up and call the main office to verify the legitimacy of any calls.
The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a series of scam calls circulating the area. They say they've received multiple calls from victims stating they had received phone calls from the sheriff's office. Officials say the calls appear to be coming from the main office phone number, and that the scammers goal is for the victim to not answer, and instead hit redial. They say if you redial, you'll actually be calling a hidden phone number instead of the sheriff's office.
The scammers are reportedly able to change the appearance of numbers calling the victim's phone to any number they desire, making victim's believe it's the sheriff's office attempting to get in contact. 'Please remember we NEVER ask for money over the phone or to deposit any money into a Venmo or PayPal as we do not accept funds through these methods for any services that we provide. We also would NEVER ask for a gift card to be bought and ask for the numbers off the card. If you receive any calls similar to these in nature hang up and call our office.,' the sheriff's office explained in a statement on social media. They're asking victims to not redial any numbers, and instead call the main office at 717-240-6390 to confirm whether the call is real or not
