Texas A&M senior receiver Ainias Smith said there have been instances where teammates haven’t been doing the right things.COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M senior receiver Ainias Smith said he noticed a troubling tendency among some of his teammates before the Aggies’ most jarring loss in decades.
“We were on time for everything the next day,” explained offensive lineman Layden Robinson, as if that was unusual for a Sunday after a game. “That shows the commitment of everybody just saying, ‘Hey, we have to get back and we have to get on our stuff’ … everybody was on time for ‘stretch and stride’ and treatment.”
It’s evident coach Jimbo Fisher must revamp his plodding offense to have a shot at a title in coming seasons, capitalizing on the recruiting of five- and four-star prospects the past few years. What’s becoming increasingly evident is Fisher, a whiz at inspiring one-liners and deeper motivational messages, also must reset the mindset — the culture he’s built over five seasons at A&M — if the sagging Aggies aren’t going to drop games to Appalachian State.
“What talking about is not ‘bought in’ to what we’re doing, it’s just that every detail of every practice rep ,” said Fisher, who has free rein to do as he wishes at A&M and has from the start. “… When you talk about ‘bought in,’ it’s not that they’re fighting the program fighting what we do … it’s every practice rep needs to be a game rep.
An example occurred in the past week, when freshman cornerback Denver Harris inexplicably posted a video of himself driving recklessly through a College Station parking garage, putting other drivers and perhaps pedestrians at risk. It’s bad enough to do it — posting a video is next level.
