You may have heard of scar trees, but how about trees-in-trees? These different types of 'modified trees' tell a story about Indigenous culture, if you know how to read them.
If you head inland in New South Wales, over the Blue Mountains and up the ancient Wiradjuri songline that is now a chain of highways, you will eventually reach the sand hills of the Barwon River, around Walgett in the state's far west. This is Gamilaroi elder Aunty Rhonda Ashby's country, but she is worried significant parts of it — including culturally modified trees — are disappearing due to agricultural expansion.
Trees planted within trees can represent life continuing after death, while other trees might have their young branches bound, twisted or plaited into shapes.ABC Central West: Micaela HambrettWestern science recognises them as "culturally modified trees" ."All trees have an identity, they have roles and responsibilities in the family unit, like people," Ms Ashby said."Western Way knowledge is held in books in libraries.
"Uncle Allan said when someone was born, they planted a tree and it was that person's tree," she said. What makes them unusual is that neither species is an epiphyte: the type of plant that grows on another plant but is sustained by airborne nutrients. The three women are on a quest for scientific and legislative recognition of trees-in-trees, and better education about modified trees more broadly.
