The Culinary Union has rejected an offer from Virgin Hotels Las Vegas to arbitrate a strike agreement, calling it a meaningless publicity stunt. Union leaders argue that the hotel's proposal is not in good faith and would likely result in unfavorable terms for workers.
Virgin Hotels Las Vegas invited Culinary Union leadership to arbitrate an agreement that could end the Culinary Union strike against the hotel-casino after more than six weeks of striking. However, responding to the message, the union's Secretary-Treasurer Ted Pappageorge, called the act a meaningless publicity stunt.
'There was a letter, but it's meaningless because if you are only willing to sit down and talk about a third of what the Strat workers requested, that's not really bargaining in good faith,' said Pappageorge. Pappageorge also said the Culinary Union received a letter requesting a third party to step in. He continued that if the union were to accept the hotel's proposition to arbitrate, the union would be legally bound to the terms established by the third party. Odds are, he said, the resolution would not be in favor of the workers. 'The key point is this: these workers are ready to bargain and make their own decisions,' said Pappageorge. 'They are not looking for a third party to step in.'According to the Culinary Union, the strike involved 700-some employees and weekend parties. On the 44th day, members were treated to Noche Cubana to honor the hotel-casino's Cuban staff, which comprise nearly 50% of the housekeepers. One union employee on the picket line said the weekend celebrations help maintain morale — especially as some experience symptoms of depression due to the extended strike.
