The Chicago Cubs' pursuit of left-handed pitcher Jesus Luzardo from the Miami Marlins appears to have ended after trade discussions reportedly fell through.
The Chicago Cubs have been involved in several big trades this week. On Friday, they acquired Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros, sending three players to Houston in exchange for the three-time All-Star. Days later, they traded first baseman/outfielder Cody Bellinger to the New York Yankees. There were also reports of the Cubs discussing a trade with the Miami Marlins for left-handed pitcher Jesus Luzardo . However, those talks appear to have fallen through.
Bruce Levine of WSCR (670-AM in Chicago) reported on Twitter/X that the deal is 'dead right now'. The Cubs' offseason work isn't done yet, though. They are still looking for another starting pitcher. A trade for Luzardo would have given the Cubs a deep starting rotation and solidified their goal of ending their four-year playoff drought. Luzardo suffered a lumbar stress reaction in June that ended his 2024 season. Prior to the injury, he was 3-6 with a 5.00 ERA in 12 starts. In 2023, Luzardo went 10-10 with a 3.58 ERA in 32 starts as the Marlins clinched a surprising National League Wild Card berth
