The Chicago Cubs are off to an early start in their spring training, reporting to Mesa, Arizona, two days ahead of other Major League teams. Despite adding key players like Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly, Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer remains focused on the current roster and building on their recent progress. The team's early start is due to their upcoming season opener in Japan against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The early birds get the worm, or in this case, the early spring training practices. The Chicago Cubs kicked off their spring training festivities in Mesa, Arizona, on Sunday, beating every other Major League Baseball team to the diamond by two days. White Sox pitchers and catchers, on the other hand, will be reporting to Glendale, Arizona, on Wednesday.

While the Cubs might not be grabbing the headlines on Super Bowl Sunday, they made their presence known with a designated workout for pitchers and catchers. This year, the Cubs made some notable additions to their roster, including Kyle Tucker and Ryan Pressly, both former Houston Astros players. Despite these acquisitions, Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer remained tight-lipped about the possibility of signing another former Astro, free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman. Hoyer stated, 'We're going to focus on the guys that are in camp, and that's the plan. I think offseasons have drifted later – whether it's waiver claims, trades, free agent signings – things happen a little bit later now. But I think given that it's February 9, I think we're focused on the guys that are here. I think we're in a competitive window. I think we've gotten better each year. I think we're in a place where we have a chance to be really good.'The Cubs' early start to spring training can be attributed to their ambitious plans for the season. They are set to embark on a Far East trip to Japan, where they will commence the season in just five weeks. Manager Craig Counsell expressed confidence in his team's readiness, saying, 'We did a little bit of more work, maybe more work, before we got here, and now it's just, we're going to do the same thing, and we have so many days – and you've just got to do your thing and on your schedule. Guys will be ready to pitch.' This trip holds particular significance for Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga, who is expected to be greeted like a hero upon his return to Tokyo for the season-opening series against the reigning World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Cubs-Dodgers Tokyo series is scheduled for March 18 and 19. The first full-squad workout for the Cubs is on Friday, Valentine's Day, marking another exciting step in their journey toward a successful season.
