Cubs manager David Ross and team president Jed Hoyer recall Jake Arrieta’s swagger and success in Chicago after he announced his retirement.

“That's what I mean, like mentally tough,” Ross said. “Being able to put his neck out on the line with his words and backing that up.

And an entire organization. Arrieta’s dominance in his 2015 Cy Young Award-winning season was a huge part of the Cubs making it to October. That success carried over into 2016, when he won both of his World Series starts.“I think every once in a while, we say, ‘Oh, so and so's pitching like 2015 Arrieta,’” Cubs president Jed Hoyer said, “and then all of sudden you read [Arrieta's] actual numbers during that period, you realize no one actually ever pitches like that.

Over his final 20 starts in 2015, Arrieta went 16-1 in 20 starts with a 0.86 ERA, striking out 147 batters in as many innings. He was as big of an acquisition as any, if not the most important, during Theo Epstein’s front office tenure.
