Chicago's top prospect blasted a go-ahead home run for his first MLB hit.
Pete Crow-Armstrong is back in the big leagues and started his 2024 season off with a bang. The Chicago Cubs ' top prospect made his season debut on Thursday and crushed a two-run home run that doubled as his first major league hit.
Crow-Armstrong came to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning with one out, Miguel Amaya on first base and Houston Astros righthander Bryan Abreu on the mound. Amaya took second on a wild pitch, then Amaya tossed a 95 mph fastball down the middle to Crow-Armstrong. Big mistake.Crow-Armstrong was called up in September of 2023, but had a dismal showing upon his arrival. Over 12 games he went 0-for-14 at the plate, while posting an on-base percentage of .176.
The 22-year-old is the No. 15 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline's rankings and opened the season in Triple-A before earning a call-up. Crow-Armstrong struggled in the minors to open the season, slashing .203/.241/.392, with two home runs and 24 strikeouts against three walks. The Cubs decided to bring him up anyway and it seems to have paid off.
The New York Mets selected Crow-Armstrong with the 19th pick in the 2020 MLB draft. He had been a star prep player at Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles. On July 30, 2021, the Mets traded him to the Cubs, receiving Javier Baez and Trevor Williams in return. He's been at the top of Chicago's prospect rankings ever since.
