The Chicago Cubs lost 5-2 to the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field. Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his second consecutive leadoff home run, but the Cubs bullpen and offense struggled, going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Edward Cabrera left the game in the fifth inning with a hand cramp, though tests came back negative.
The Chicago Cubs were unable to replicate Monday night's walk-off magic, falling 5-2 to the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field. Pete Crow-Armstrong continued his phenomenal stretch by leading off the game with his second consecutive leadoff home run and third in his last four games.
The center fielder extended his on-base streak to 19 games, during which he has posted a 1.252 OPS with 16 extra-base hits, including seven homers. Since being moved to the leadoff spot by manager Craig Counsell, Crow-Armstrong has slugged .773 with a 229 wRC+, making him one of the hottest hitters in baseball. Despite his early heroics, the Cubs managed only seven hits total, six of which came off Rockies starter Ryan Feltner.
The team finished the night with seven hits but failed to capitalize on opportunities, going 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and leaving nine runners on base. This continues a season-long trend for the Cubs, who entered the game with a .677 OPS in RISP situations. The inability to deliver clutch hits has been a recurring issue, as the team has now stranded 593 runners on the year.
Edward Cabrera had a promising start, no-hitting the Rockies through the first three innings. However, trouble found him in the fourth. Jake McCarthy singled, and Willi Castro doubled to plate Colorado's first run.
Then TJ Rumfield launched a go-ahead two-run home run, turning a 2-0 Cubs lead into a 3-2 deficit in just three batters. Cabrera regained his composure to limit further damage but was pulled in the fifth inning after issuing two walks and striking out Edouard Julien. He exited with Cubs trainer Nick Frangella, and the team later diagnosed the issue as a hand cramp.
Craig Counsell told reporters after the game that tests on Cabrera's hand came back clean and negative.
'All things considered, he's good. It's a cramp right now as far as we can tell. All the other tests are clean and negative as of now,' Counsell said. Cabrera's sudden lack of command in the fourth inning raised concerns, as his velocity had previously dipped in similar situations.
The Cubs rotation has been plagued by injuries and inconsistency, and the team desperately needs their starters to stabilize. Offensive woes extended beyond the RISP failures. Alex Bregman, the Cubs' third-highest paid player, has been a major disappointment. His OPS drops from .817 overall to .572 with runners on base, and to .483 with runners in scoring position.
Bregman has only two extra-base hits in RISP situations this year, and he leads the team with 70 outs in those moments. Nearly half of those outs are strikeouts (19) or pop-ups (14). For perspective, Joey Votto did not hit a pop-up in the entire 2010 season, spanning 6,289 plate appearances. Dansby Swanson, who was pinch-hit for in the ninth inning by Pedro Ramirez, is batting .175 on the season with just six hits total with runners in scoring position.
Nico Hoerner, who hit .297 in the first month, has cooled off significantly. The Cubs will look to bounce back and win the series in Wednesday's game before welcoming the Toronto Blue Jays. The loss drops the Cubs to 38-36, while the Rockies improve to 28-46
