The University of Colorado Boulder opened a storefront on Monday to sell secondhand, discounted items to the general public.

Electronics Specialist Brandon Brown stocks shelves at the University of Colorado Boulder surplus store in Boulder on Monday. Chairs for $10 and like-new toolboxes for $5. Staplers, books, posters and art for $1. A $120 laptop, and an exercise bike for $150.

Items available at the surplus store include chairs, computers, printers, electronics, office supplies, tables, books, toolboxes, bookshelves and stools. While the public storefront is new, the surplus store is not. For decades, CU Boulder’s surplus store was available by appointment only and during biannual auctions. Worthington said she immediately recognized the need for a public storefront when she was hired seven years ago.

Pricing on desktops and laptops varies based on condition, specs and newness but typically won’t exceed a few hundred dollars. One shelf of laptops at the store on Monday, for example, were priced at $120. Brown said there’s been at least 10 years of conversations on how to make a storefront work well. So far, there’s been steady traffic at the store and Brown is excited to see people responding well.
