CSX scraps plan for new rail yard in blow to Greater Triangle
, a spokesperson for CSX , offered no details about why the Jacksonville-based rail giant had changed its plans in Lee County.The move comes as a blow not only to Lee County, but the southern edge of the Triangle which has experienced tremendous growth over the last few years.with Lee County to rezone 244 acres from residential agriculture to heavy industrial to develop a new rail yard, which likely would have spurred economic activity in the area.
"We have since fielded some inquiries from others expressing potential interest in the site, but nothing has materialized yet," Randolph said. Lee County property records show that CSX never purchased the land, which sits near Osgood Road. The land has an appraised value of $496,300 and sits just south of Triangle Innovation Point, the megasite whereThis decision by CSX comes at a time when business is booming for railroads. Reporting its 2022 earnings last week, CSX said that revenue, net earnings and earnings per share were all up compared to 2021.
In 2016, CSX identified a location in Johnston County for a new terminal. State and local leaders praised the project as an economic win for the area. But soon after the project was announced, homeowners who would've been impacted by the facility organized and tried to turn public sentiment
