©Tristram KentonIt’s a film that left a massive imprint on me when I was little, because it was so weird and so surreal. It was the first time I’d seen really weird creatures… there were no humans in the film at all, it was completely puppets. I was reminded that the film had some really strong ecological overtones, and [thought] that would make a really interesting way of using it as a kind of shadow through the lens of today.
The performance features pertinent spoken word poetry by Isaiah Hull, including the line, “the first thing we forgot was ice”What we’re always trying to do is tell stories in different ways and assemble different collaborators. So I find it curious that some critics say we’re not interested in storytelling, because we totally are! We just aren’t interested in the ways they have been told in the past in dance.
I think part of the backlash is partly also a miscommunication about what all of these AI conversations are. When you’re developing new technology, the ethics around it takes time. For me it’s very important for artists to be part of the conversation, so that we can also contribute to it. I’ve always been curious about what would happen if you worked with AI to build an incredible dance, and to see whether or not people would be able to tell whether it was hand-made or not.
