Oliver Young-Myles takes a look at how Crystal Palace fared as part of i’s season reviews for all 20 Premier League clubs
. Crystal Palace fans were desperate for the season to end a few months ago. Now they are wishing it could go on for a few more weeks such has been the impact the Austrian has made in a short period of time.
Reappointing a manager who had been moved on two years earlier was an uninspiring move that created a sense of drift and disillusionment among the fanbase. He waited too long to sack him too, allowing a toxic atmosphere to fester. It’s fitting that in Palace’s first season post-Wilfried Zaha, there was not a standout star. Joachim Andersen’s durability has been crucial, Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise have been mesmerising but hamstrung by injury, and Wharton has been a revelation.
The 20-year-old has taken his big-money move in his stride, instantly becoming one of his new team’s most important players. The beauty of Wharton’s game is its simplicity: he always attempts to play the right pass and usually completes it.When he wins the ball back, he quickly moves it on to Eze or Olise to make something happen. He snaps into tackles when his defence is coming under pressure and drives forward when there is space to do so.
