Man United saw a number of young players depart the club during the summer transfer window, but came up against two academy graduates in the Carabao Cup
Mason Mount, Andre Onana, Rasmus Hojlund, Altay Bayindir and Jonny Evans all arrived on permanent deals while Sergio Reguilon and Sofyan Amrabat joined on loan on transfer deadline day. It wrapped up a potentially tricky window for Erik ten Hag, with the club setting a budget of around £120million beforehand due to Financial Fair Play concerns, with that amount being added to by departures.
It is, however, a strategy that comes with risk. Against Crystal Palace on Tuesday night United came up against academy graduate Dean Henderson as he made his debut for his new club. When the former Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United loanee then had to come off with an injury, another former United academy graduate replaced him in the form of Sam Johnstone.
Chelsea let both Mohamed Salah and Kevin De Bruyne leave while they were still finding their way and look at what has happened to both of them since. Admittedly, that is taking things to extremes and none of the players United let go over the summer have shown they are capable of hitting similar heights.
