Sources like Herridge’s often come forward at great personal and professional risk. But, under current law, journalists can’t promise them confidentiality without caveats.
The law protects confidential communications in any number of other contexts: lawyers and clients, psychiatrists and patients, even married couples. It’s not because lawyers and therapists are more important than the rest of us but because confidentiality is crucial to their ability to do their jobs, which are important for society. Same goes for journalists.
