Israel's war with Hamas has become a flashpoint in the U.S. Senate race in Texas.
GOP senator cites Iran policies for opposing Jack Lew. Democratic rival says he’s impeded national security for political ends.
Cruz opposed the new U.S. ambassador confirmed Tuesday, former Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, with Allred accusing him of trying to score partisan points. The Dallas Democrat backs humanitarian aid the White House has sought for Gaza and the West Bank – aid Cruz says would be used to murder Israelis. The Senate confirmed Lew 53-43, with support from just two Republicans, roughly six weeks after President Joe Biden nominated him.
“The idea that we would confirm an ambassador to Israel who has been a leading advocate for funding the terrorists who are murdering Israelis is idiotic,” he said. “When he was Treasury Secretary, Jack Lew was the point of the spear flooding the ayatollah with cash. That cash funded terrorism.”The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza has put the death toll at 8,525. More than 1,400 people have been killed in Israel, most of them civilians killed in the opening day attacks.
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee also castigated Cruz for opposing Lew. Spokesman David Bergstein asserted that “while violence and terrorism continue to pose grave security threats in the Middle East, Cruz … petty politics above all else.”
