After suspending operations following a pedestrian accident last fall, Cruise will deploy drivered cars in Mountain View and Sunnyvale to collect road information. The vehicles won't be operating autonomously, and the company emphasizes this step is towards restarting its robotaxi service.
The autonomous vehicle company — which suspended its local operations after one of its cars hit and dragged a woman in San Francisco 20 feet last October — announced Thursday it plans to put up to five cars on the road in Mountain View and Sunnyvale this fall. But unlike the last time its cars were on the road in the area, those vehicles won’t be driving themselves.
“While the purpose of this small-scale presence is specifically to allow employees to engage with our product for research and development purposes, we look forward to taking this step as we continue our conversations with California regulators and stakeholders,” Cruise spokeswoman Hannah Lindow said in an emailed statement.
“Cruise is still actively working with the DMV to reinstate our driverless permits,” Lindow said in an email. In the wake of the accident, CEO Karl Vogt and nine other executives resigned from Cruise. The company also laid off 900 workers, or about a quarter of its staff. Additionally, it reportedly paid the woman as much as $12 million as part of a settlement over her injuries.
