7NEWS: Parents of Hunter Valley wedding bus crash victim Bec Mullen call for bus safety reform

“We’ve been having long-term discussions with the local bus safety company about their safety standards over years, not months, prior to the accident,” Matt said. The couple have made several safety complaints to the Transport for NSW and Hunter Valley Buses — the company that operates school buses in the area — over the safety of school buses.Hunter Valley Buses was not the company involved in the fatal wedding crash.

The Mullen’s claim their youngest daughter Erin was among children forced to stand or sit on the floor with no access to seatbelts on a school bus run. A staff member who works for Hunter Valley Buses in Singleton told 7NEWS that of the 29 vehicles the company operated, only one was fitted with seatbelts.Rebecca Mullen’s father Matt Mullen said it felt like ‘tragic irony’ to have spent years fighting for major safety changes only to lose their daughter in a devastating bus crash. Andrew and Lynan Scott, Kane Symons, Kyah McBride, Rebecca Mullen, Zachary Bray, Angus Craig, Tori Cowburn and Nadene McBride died in the Hunter Valley bus crash.

“The unfairness that we were aware of bus safety and then to lose Bec and her friends in this way is just a tragic irony,” Matt said. The Mullens hope their daughter’s legacy of “love and kindness” will drive change to protect children in the community.“We pray to God no other family has to endure anything like we’re enduring.”- With Annie Pullar
