is an excellent warm-up. Connecting Oconee State Park and Table Rock State Park in South Carolina, this 77-mile trail takes hikers across the border into North Carolina, along the Chattahoochee River border to Georgia, then eventually back down to South Carolina.
The Foothills Trail is an access trail to the Appalachian Trail, but it is a wonderful stand-alone trail itself and, while through-hiking can take anywhere from 5 to 10 days, there are plenty of out-and-backs that can be easily done in an afternoon. You can comfortably tackle this hike from April onward, but this would be an excellent choice for an autumn hike between mid-October and mid-November; the foliage and piedmont views are truly breathtaking. Located along the borderlands between Utah and Nevada, this National Park is proof that incredible things can come in small packages.is one of our smaller National Parks and it doesn’t get as much attention as some of the marquis parks like the Great Smoky Mountains, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon or Yosemite. Instead, this relatively quiet park hosts a myriad of activities including caving, star gazing, camping and hiking. Located near the Wheeler Peak campground, the Summit Trail leads to the mighty Wheeler Peak—a formidable alpine landscape where the weather can change in an instant. Discerning hikers should register at the trailhead, dress in windproof layers and bring along plenty of snacks. Since winter is a frigid, blustery season for the South Dakota Badlands, early autumn is an ideal time for a relatively isolated visit. Just before rounding the corner to the Ben Reifel Visitor Center, you’ll see a long parking area for Door Trail and Window Trail. However, at the southernmost end of that parking lot is the trailhead for Notch Trail, easily the best-designated trail in the Badlands and ideal for a short afternoon hike with the family. It eventually terminates at a “notch” in the formation that provides a spectacular view of the lower prairie. Even though this hike is easily completed in under an hour, hikers should always bring lots of water when exploring the semi-arid Badlands. is ideal for a late-autumn or winter hike in the Tucson region of Arizona. This area is managed by the Forest Service and is a part of the Coronado National Forest. Visitors who are not accustomed to Arizona heat should steer clear in the summer months, but temperatures in November, December and January are quite a bit more manageable. On top of that, fire season tends to take its toll on Sabino Canyon during the summer and the area is often closed, so wait until things cool off to take advantage of this trail system. Sabino Canyon trails take hikers through desert landscapes, sandstone canyons and refreshing pools that are perfect for a quick dip. Be sure not to miss the mighty saguaro cacti, which are native to this region and almost nowhere else. Again, make sure to bring plenty of water; Arizona stays hot and dry year-round. Surrounded by its heavily-visited siblings like Arches, Zion and Bryce Canyon,is probably one of the most underrated National Parks in the system. Not only does Capitol Reef feature fresh fruit orchards planted by historic Mormon settlers, its trail diversity and access to exquisite geology needs to be seen to be believed. If you’re looking to get out of the beating sun for a relatively flat and easy hike, check out Grand Wash Trail. This 2.2-mile trail winds its way through a dried river bed with impressive canyons jutting up on either side. Not only is the trail itself a fun hike, but the drive to the trailhead is full of exciting twists and turns. Avoid the more crowded Utah parks and head to Capitol Reef instead. This one is geared toward our Alaska crowd, but if you’re somehow bored in The Last Frontier and in need of an in-and-out day hike, head to. This hike is no big deal by Alaska standards; it’s a six-mile one-way valley hike that leads to beautiful peaks and striking blue glacial lakes, and when you’re finished breathing in the icy glacial air, all that’s left is to turn around and hike back the other way. However, things are not always as simple as they may seem; be aware that the last mile of the trail is a vast boulder field. Take extra care if you are visiting this trail in early summer before the snow patches have all melted, as it is not uncommon to punch through a snow patch and get your foot lodged between two boulders. Use extreme caution to cross this boulder field, but the reward at the end is a stunning lake view and a place to relax in the sun. The U.S. is full of wilderness trails that are perfect for anything between a brief stroll to a strenuous through-hike. You don’t have to tackle the entire Appalachian Trail to be a hiker; there are plenty of smaller, lesser-known treks for hikers of all skill levels.
