Reviews are trickling in for Cronos: The New Dawn, and the game is not being as well-received as Silent Hill 2 remake. Developer Bloober Team had a mighty task ahead of it to make a new IP on the heels of one of the most popular horror franchises of all time, and it seems this sophomore effort is not impressing critics as much this time around.
Over on Metacritic, Cronos: The New Dawn is currently sitting at a 79 critic score at this time of writing. Silent Hill 2 remake, almost a year later, is sitting at a score of 86. No user scores are available for Cronos yet, as the game just entered early access this morning. Cronos: The New Dawn Reviews Are In Mostly Positive Impressions, With Some Major Complaints Reviews for Cronos: The New Dawn praise the game's sci-fi atmosphere and general scope, with some criticism aimed at its clunky combat and predictable scares. The game's formulaic approach to horror is also being cited as a point of contention: some fans will enjoy the game's use of horror tropes, while others may find them derivative, according to some reviewers. In ScreenRant's review of Cronos: The New Dawn , our reviewer cited the story as a weak point, combat as good but nothing new, and also noted some concerning pre-release bugs. Many reviews praise the game's ideas and intentions, but note that the game may fail to live up to horror expectations for some players. Cronos: The New Dawn Had A Lot To Live Up To Horror Fans Will Still Likely Find Enjoyment While it doesn't appear that Cronos is going to live up to the likely lofty expectations of SH2 remake fans, there is likely plenty of horror fun to be had with the game. It features a unique enemy merging mechanic, a limited inventory system, and old-school survival horror design elements. Bloober's ambition to not make Silent Hill again is admirable, and getting a new IP in an era dominated by remasters and remakes is exciting. Even if Cronos doesn't hit the same critical score as other big hits of 2025, like Clair Obscur: Expediiton 33 or Split Fiction, survival horror fans are likely going to enjoy themselves with it.
