Cristian Javier, Bryan Abreu, Rafael Montero and Ryan Pressly — two international signings and two trade acquisitions — struck out 14 and surrendered three baserunners as the Astros threw the second no-hitter in World Series history

Houston Astros relief pitcher Ryne Stanek, left, talks with Philadelphia Phillies Garrett Stubbs before Game 4 of the World Series at Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2022, in Philadelphia.PHILADELPHIA — They came here for a coronation and control of a World Series few thought they’d ever reach. Citizens Bank Park’s patrons donned red, downed beers, dented ear drums and derided the team an entire country loves to loathe.

“ told me after last night’s game, after what happened, that I was going to throw a no-hitter today,” Cristian Javier said through an interpreter. “I said ‘That would happen, God willing, and we were going to keep our faith in God.” Javier, Bryan Abreu, Rafael Montero and Ryan Pressly — two international signings and two trade acquisitions — struck out 14 Phillies and surrendered three baserunners. Javier secured the first 18 outs before each reliever totaled three apiece. Pressly procured the final one, pirouetting on the pitcher’s mound while J.T. Realmuto’s ground ball rolled toward third baseman Alex Bregman and pumping his fists after he fielded it.

Only one exited a bat harder than 100 mph — a sixth-inning groundout by Kyle Schwarber. Schwarber struck another hard grounder just past Yuli Gurriel in the third. It bounced sailed foul by a few inches. Two pitches later, he watched a two-strike slider clip the strike zone for a second out. He needed 96 to ravage a potent Phillies lineup for six innings, dominating with the very pitch Philadelphia pounds. Each of the Phillies’ first four hitters slugged at least .502 against four-seam fastballs during the regular season. Javier’s entire arsenal is predicated on a four-seamer thrown from a low arm slot, with sneaky movement and only a tick over 93 mph,

“I think that’s the best fastball in baseball right now,” Vázquez said. “The electricity of that fastball — you don’t care if it’s 92, 93, 94 . A lot of swing and miss and foul balls.”
