JJ, Rossi, and Prentiss in Criminal Minds: Evolution
Despite its start on network TV, with Criminal Minds airing on CBS as an annual show for 15 years, the show has found a new generation of viewers on streaming. When the series ended in 2020, with Penelope Garcia quitting the Behavioral Analysis Unit marking the end of her era with the BAU, it did feel like it was the perfect time to wrap up the procedural.
That said, it didn't take long for Paramount+ to realize how Criminal Minds maintained its popularity, eventually reviving it with a darker and grittier take in Criminal Minds: Evolution. Several years later, the show continues to be a hit for the platform. At a time when streaming shows don't last for a few seasons, Criminal Minds: Evolution proves that tried and tested storytelling formats can endure this fast-paced era of storytelling. While the original BAU team was great, the rebranded version has been able to find a new identity with a revamped roster of veteran members and fresh faces. Beyond that, there continues to be a focus on tackling interesting cases involving some of the worst serial killers in the country. As officially confirmed, Paramount+ has renewed Criminal Minds: Evolution for season 5 to premiere in 2027 and has set May 28 as the release date for season 19. While the streamer never really left the show in the reneal bubble for very long, the fact that it is confirming its fate beyond its 2026 return indicates how big of a performer it is for the platform. Watch the promo clip for BAU's anticipated return below: In addition to the release date and renewal status, Paramount+ has also revealed a long list of guest stars for Criminal Minds: Evolution season 4's run, which includes Connor Storrie , Justin Kirk , Yvette Nicole Brown , Clark Gregg , Paul F. Tompkins , Cress Williams , Kofi Siriboe , Lyndon Smith , Richard Cabral , Jeri Ryan , Rob Yang , Nicholas Gonzalez , Inny Clemons , Nicole Pacent , Dash Mihok , Joseph Cross and Cara Jade Myers . While it's likely that a good portion of this guest list will be unsubs, some of them might actually play good or at least neutral characters in the series. For example, Criminal Minds: Evolution season 4 will mark the actor's return to the series as FBI Director Ray Madison. It's curious how he fits into this new cycle, considering how he barely had any presence during the previous year. However, his return indicates that Prentiss and the rest of the BAU might have to deal with office politics once again. Beyond that, there's obviously interest in seeing Storrie's role in the procedural, on the heels of Heated Rivalry's success. Related Yes! Criminal Minds: Evolution Can Still Make Up For Spencer Reid's Already Disappointing Season 2 Return Spencer Reid's Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 is already massively disappointing, but luckily, the Paramount+ show has the chance to make amends. Posts 4 By Ana Dumaraog It's curious what Elias Voit's participation in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 4 will be. After being the primary villain of the show in its first three years on Paramount+, Zach Gilford has become part of the main cast, which means that it's possible that his role will continue to evolve beyond a traumatized psychopath. Still, it will be great to see the BAU finally have a leg up on him, assuming that he gives into his villainous tendencies following some kind of redemption in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3.
