The curious case of Tomiko Miller, who was arrested for robbing the Louis Vuitton store in Union Square last year, may shine light on the public safety debate in SF. Or it may just depress the hell out of you. Either way, it’s worth telling the tale.

A screenshot from a video filmed by a bystander shows a robbery underway at the Louis Vuitton store at Union Square on Nov. 19. The grey Mustang parked out front was driven by Tomiko Miller, who was arrested that night in relation to the robbery.

Miller is a convicted felon. On the night of the Vuitton burglary, a passenger in his car had a gun. You might remember. People running in every direction. It was the night of Nov. 19. And it was chaos. Then he went out and got arrested again, charged with multiple counts of burglary. A mere three months later.

Seeing him up close, my heart sank. Tomiko Miller is just a little bit older than my own son. And he’s in a world of trouble. Law enforcement doesn’t quite see it that way. Tracy McCray, the acting president of the San Francisco police officers union, rejected the notion that environment breeds criminals.

“We can open the jails and let everybody out. But do we have a plan in place for when people reenter society?” she said. “What are they going to do? What skills do they need to be self-sufficient? Where are the programs that you tout for them?”
