With Test's in Perth failing to attract big crowds, Cricket Australia is turning to an old favourite, the hill, to reignite passions in the west.

The age of super stadiums has rendered the humble hill a thing of the past — although in Perth it will make a surprise return as venues increasingly turn to gimmicky drop-in features to help break the monotony of bare seats as a backdrop to the entertainment taking place on the drop-in pitches in the middle.

That was the third Test to be held in Perth's new stadium after Tests were moved from the decrepit WACA Ground post the 2017 Ashes, ending 47 years of history encompassing 44 men's Test matches at the WACA. Domestic are matches still held at the smaller venue, while the Australian women's team's Test match against South Africa will also take place at the WACA Ground in February, although it is in the midst of a $75 million refurbishment to reduce capacity to 10,000.
