Crews recently began work on an abandoned mine fire in Carbon County which put out plumes of hazardous smoke into the air within the last few months.

Crews recently began work on an abandoned mine fire in Carbon County which put out plumes of hazardous smoke into the air within the last few months .

Fluke said the recent developments were treated as an emergency situation. Crews started working in the area on November 27 and smoke impacts have lessened dramatically. Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining is contracting work to help seal off the ventilation points. Crews are flying in supplies via helicopter.

Fluke said the main focus of the recent work was to shut off oxygen supply and apply fire retardant foam to areas that were unsealed.
