Clean-up efforts are underway in Ketchikan following a landslide that closed a two-lane road on Sunday night.

“They completed an observation flight over the landslide area and confirmed it’s safe to begin moving the debris,” Sam Dapcevich, a spokesperson for the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities, said. “Our geotechs are making sure that things are safe, and they’re doing some on-the-ground observations of the slide.”
Although the cause of the Sunday landslide has yet to be determined, Dapcevich said, he assumes it will be related to the weather Ketchikan saw over the weekend.
