Irondequoit, N.Y. — No one was injured when a boat caught fire Thursday at the Rochester Yacht Club.

Chief Kenneth Stavalone from the St. Paul Boulevard Fire District said the vessel was fully engulfed when crews arrived.

Firefighters had to cut into certain areas of the boat to get to the body of the fire in the engine compartment, where the fire likely started. "These boat fires tend to be a lot hotter and more violent due to the synthetic petroleum-based materials that the boats are made up of, whether it be the plastics or the fiberglass in the resins," Stavalone said. "They burn hotter and really quickly, so it's more important to get a lot of water on it really quickly."

Crews from the Rochester and North Greece fire departments helped prevent the fire from spreading to other boats. No other damage was reported. "Because of the size of the boat, obviously there will be more material to burn and more petroleum material to burn," Stavalone said. "In addition to that, it's going to carry extra fuel. As a precaution, we always notify the DEC because if any of those products get into waterways, we want to rectify that as soon as possible as well."Stay Connected
