The largest debris-removal project in California history disposed of twice the amount taken from the World Trade Center site after the 9/11 attacks, officials said.

Crews have finished removing millions of tons of debris left by a Northern California wildfire last year that killed 86 people and virtually annihilated a town, officials announced Tuesday.

The Camp fire that began Nov. 8, 2018, was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in state history. Federal and state agencies teamed up in a vast program to quickly remove hazardous materials and the remains of burned homes.
