Crew members ejected safely from the Navy jets after the crash at Mountain Home Airbase in southwestern Idaho.

The Mountain Home Police Department announced at around 1:20 p.m. local time that the remainder of the airshow has been canceled. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area and not attempt to travel to the base while crews continue their response.

It appears that as the jets were flying in tandem, one lost altitude, making contact with the lower jet and causing the pair to spiral downwards. Kim Sykes, marketing director for Silver Wings of Idaho, one of the groups involved in planning the airshow, told AP the collision happened off base and she did not witness the impact itself but saw smoke rising afterward. Subsequent reports located the crash as occurring around two miles off-base.

Mountain Home Air Force Base said in a social media post that it went into lockdown following the crash during the Gunfighter Skies Air Show. Base officials said emergency responders were on scene and that an investigation was underway.

"An aircraft incident has occurred at Mountain Home Air Force Base during the Gunfighter Skies Air Show two miles northwest of the base," the post stated. "Emergency responders are on the scene, an investigation is underway, and more details will be released as they become available.

" A follow-up post announced that the aircrew involved in the incident were all in stable condition, and the base thanked all guests"for your patience and compassion, which has allowed us to quickly and safely respond to the incident. "
