District Judge Jon Folmar says truancy can lead to the school-to-prison pipeline.

) - After being a prosecutor for over 30 years, one Crenshaw County judge wants to address a trend he is seeing in state prisons.

“Seeing a trend whereas I would have young men, usually in court who violated the law for various different things, that I had to send to the Department of Corrections, and I found that most of them were high school dropouts,“ said Folmar. He says the best way to improve this trend is to keep kids in school, which is why he introduced a truancy program to Crenshaw County Schools and Crenshaw Christian Academy. The judge says a similar model has been successful in school systems in Coffee County.

“We’re trying to teach responsibility because a responsible child becomes a responsible adult,” said Folmar.
