From the famous yellow suits to the most fabulous gym uniforms in cinematic history, costumer designer Mona May discusses the iconic outfits made for Clueless for the film's 25th anniversary.
. But even though it is implied that Cher is wearing designer clothes , May didn’t have a ton to work with at the beginning of shooting. “I had maybe $200,000 for the costumes, which isn’t a lot,” May says. “I shopped everywhere. I went to the mall, I went to thrift stores. I had to be resourceful to make this happen.” May estimates that she made hundreds of costumes for the film because every kid in the background of a party or in class was dressed by her team.
We decided on Alicia’s outfit first because everything revolved around her outfit. I designed the black and white suit for Dionne to complement Cher but not overpower her. The fabulous hat was from Kokin, a designer in New York. I added the vinyl lapels on the suit to go with the hat. I knew I wanted to keep red, black, and white for Dionne because she was sassier and edgy. Dionne had such a fabulous sense of style. She probably has the same closet as Cher with the computer.
“It was funny to introduce her at the gym scene. In the beginning we wanted to make this very stark contrast. She was an artist so we wanted to reflect that in her graphic tees. Then she’s given a makeover and she’s a copy of Cher. The clothes wore her. We were finding who she is through these clothes that Cher was dressing her in. She was not as sophisticated as Cher and Dionne. She was a different person from a different socioeconomic class and she was learning.
“He is a quintessential college boy, you could pick him up now. I also liked to have a graphic on the shirt that relates to the character that represents them. I did that with Paul Rudd’s character. There was one tee that was cancer awareness, we had one that was from an obscure bar in Austin. Always thinking of fun cool messages throughout the film.
