“We hope to stay within the budget, I’ll put it that way,” the head of Retirement Systems of Alabama said of the $325 million project.

The new Alabama State House is under construction on Ripley Street in the capitol complex in Montgomery. The Retirement Systems of Alabama is building it and will lease it to the Legislature.Bronner said the RSA had to rebid a portion of the project, causing a delay of about four to six months.

The RSA, which owns office buildings across downtown Montgomery, resort hotels around the state, and the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, is building the new State House and will lease it to the Legislature. Bronner said the project is, for now, on track to stay within an estimated cost of about $325 million. He said early stages of the project came in under budget, including the electrical and mechanical portions.

Problems cited with the building include limited space for public access, poor accessibility for people with disabilities, flooding and mold.
