Cleveland Fire said that when they arrived at the scene, Garfield Heights Police were trying to get two people out of the vehicle, but tree branches made it difficult.
CLEVELAND — A 12-year-old boy is dead, and a 13-year-old boy is in critical condition, after police said the stolen car they were in crashed into a tree on Johnston Parkway in Cleveland .
It happened just before 4 p.m. Saturday. Firefighters said they had to cut the pair from the tangle of metal and tree branches. Both boys were rushed to the hospital, but the 12-year-old died. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office identified him as Aydin Taylor.
Investigators said at last check, the 13-year-old was still in the intensive care unit of the hospital. Police suspect the 13-year-old was driving at the time of the crash. The blue Kia had been reported stolen from Cleveland, according to police. Cleveland Police also said a stolen gun was found in the wreckage.
A worker at a nearby business said surveillance cameras captured the car speeding through a curve in the road when the driver appeared to lose control, hit a light pole with the back of the car, sending the car careening into a tree. That worker said the video was turned over to police, who are continuing to investigate what happened.
