'Crapshoot': Acosta defends Jeffrey Epstein's controversial plea deal in new documentsLabor Secretary Alex Acosta speaks during a media availability at the Department of Labor, Wednesday, July 10, 2019, in Washington.

The House Oversight Committee released a transcript from the interview it conducted with the former U.S. attorney who gave disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein a controversial plea deal nearly 18 years ago. Alex Acosta, who once served as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida, testified before the Committee in September. At that time, Acosta told the Committee the case against Epstein was riddled with issues that would have likely prevented a conviction. According to Acosta, the plea deal was necessary to get Epstein behind bars, while a trial risked letting him off completely. And, ultimately, the trial was a crapshoot, and we just wanted the guy to go to jail," Acosta said, according to And, at the end of the day, it was our judgment that -- and my judgment -- that the signal this would send to the community was an important signal," Acosta added. "On the other hand, if we go to trial and we roll the dice and we do the crapshoot and we lose, what kind of signal does that send? That says that he got away with it, that you can do that more. And so we thought it was very, very important to send that signal, and that's why -- that's one reason we favored the negotiated plea."that avoided federal charges by serving 13 months in jail and pleading guilty to state charges. Under the deal, Epstein registered as a sex offender and paid settlements to victims. House Democratic lawmakers said Acosta refused to admit it was a "sweetheart deal," adding that he didn't claim any responsibility to the Epstein survivors. Jeffrey Epstein got a sweetheart deal and was allowed to leave prison daily thanks to Alex Acosta," Oversight Dems previously wrote on X. "During the time he was supposed to be in prison, he raped and abused multiple women. Then Trump appointed Acosta to his cabinet. Release the files!"
