Australia’s $40 billion education sector is set for a shake-up as the government attempts to sift genuine students from those who use it as a backdoor to work.

“More than half of the people who receive permanent skills visas under our current system arrived in Australia on a student visa.”Ms O’Neil says a key aim of the migration reforms will be to ensure that the students who come here are genuine and that they have the skills and abilities to move into permanent residency if they choose.
One third of international graduates work in jobs at a skill level commensurate with their degree. More than 50 per cent of international graduates work in jobs that are in the lowest two skill levels, such as labourers, baristas and sales assistants. The review says international students should be selected for the permanent skills program “based on their demonstrated potential to succeed in our labour market”. But Ms O’Neil declined to provide more detail as to how that would work.
