CPS and OCI are calling the 120-megawatt site Alamo City ESS. With it, CPS has battery capacity to power more than 100,000 homes.
CPS Energy will soon have enough battery storage to power more than 104,000 homes on an extremely hot or cold day after signing a new deal for a site that will add another 120 megawatts of capacity. The city-owned utility and San Antonio -based OCI Energy are calling the new site Alamo City ESS, which stands for energy storage system. It will be located in South Bexar County . Before the latest addition, CPS had 400 megawatts of battery power in the works as part of its Vision 2027 plan.
Texas grid’s largest stand-alone battery storage site is rising in South San Antonio “This agreement is another important step toward a future focused on reliability, sustainability, and clean energy,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg, who’s also a CPS trustee. OCI has a long-standing relationship with CPS. It runs a solar farm on 70 acres near Loop 1604 that’s already powering Texans’ homes.

If the power lines get overcrowded, it could lead to cascading outages across the grid.
