Dallas Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance scrambled for a long run before being touchdown short of the goal line during training camp practice in Oxnard, California, July 31, 2024.to discuss his development since he joined the Cowboys’ quarterback room. In the first two weeks of training camp, Lance has studied Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush while working through the team’s offensive playbook.
Despite entering the league as a top 5 draft pick, Lance hasn’t seen the field much. How does he internalize the intricacies of the position?“Obviously the reps are part of it and it’s going to come throughout camp, throughout the preseason and things like that. That time is gonna come, but for me, and I’ve been a backup quarterback for some time now in these four years, going into Year 4 now,” Lance said. “You kind of learn to get those mental reps the best way you possibly can.
“I was a Florida Gators fan growing up, strictly because my dad was a Florida State fan,” Lance said. “So, I grew up in the Tebow days, slamming his head on the helmet. Everything like that, when I was really little. Then growing up, I was a Minnesota guy so we had Teddy for a little bit, had Brett for a little bit. So those guys were fun to watch.”
Lance also listed Lamar Jackson and Deshaun Watson as players he followed while they made their mark on the college football scene.
