Tight end is the least experienced position on the Cowboys’ roster. The experience Ferguson and Hendershot do have, however, is being put to good use.
The Cowboys, of course, did not advertise this fact in 2022.But a long rookie year proved to be physically draining for Ferguson and Hendershot. They lost meaningful weight, Ferguson dipping at times into the high 230s. Hendershot said that he weighed between 215 to 220 pounds by season’s end.
The weight loss was felt in the run game. Compounding the effect, right tackle Terence Steele suffered a major knee injury in December, and his replacement Tyron Smith faced some natural headwinds when working to become comfortable on the right side. “One of my goals for this season is that I want to stay above 237 the whole season,” said Hendershot, who bulked up to around 245 pounds. “I feel like that will help a lot because I lost strength from losing that weight. I want to keep that up.”Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb isn’t focused on contract extension: ‘I got a Super Bowl to win’Coach Mike McCarthy has identified improving the C-gap blocking as a goal this year in the run game. Steele is healthy. So will the veteran tight ends.
Along with their physical gains, Ferguson and Hendershot’s technique in the run game is further along this year, a logical result of their added development time under tight ends coach Lunda Wells.“There were glimpses of having great footwork, having good leverage, having good strike,” Ferguson said. “But it’s consistency. It’s putting it all together, so it’s not where, ‘Hey, it’s just the first quarter that is looking good.’ It’s all four quarters. It could go into overtime.
“I’ve come a long way in just a year and hopefully will be around here as long as I can. With Dubb, I just feel like I can be an every-down tight end in the NFL.”The experience Ferguson and Hendershot do have, however, is being put to good use.
