FRISCO — Nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters returned to the Cowboys’ facility Monday morning after visiting last week. This time, he was there to...

One benefit to Peters’ signing is his ability to be a resource to the rookie first-round pick. Tyler Smith played left tackle at Tulsa but practiced at left guard during training camp following a spring in which he rotated between left tackle and guard. Smith, who turned 21 in April, is still honing his technique.

“Just having him in the building is great for me,” Smith said. “We’re all a team. We’re all geared toward the same goal, and that’s winning. ...He said, ‘Getting out of your stance is the most important part.’ He really emphasized that. He said, ‘Just get to your spot, look at who you’re blocking, and just make sure you’re really accurate with your hands.’

As Peters acclimates, rookie fifth-round pick Matt Waletzko could be the Cowboys’ backup left tackle Sunday with Josh Ball an option on the right side. Neither has NFL regular season experience. Waletzko is deferring season-ending shoulder surgery in order to continue playing.
