The Dallas Cowboys are keeping their starting quarterback for Week 18 a secret, even from the Washington Commanders. Jerry Jones, the Cowboys owner and general manager, is refusing to reveal whether Cooper Rush or Trey Lance will start the final game of the season.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance warmed up his arm alongside fellow quarterback Cooper Rush during pregame warmups at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on August 17, 2024. The Cowboys face the Las Vegas Raiders in a preseason game. Cooper Rush has filled the starting role in every game since Dak Prescott was sidelined for the season due to a hamstring injury. But with the race for the playoffs and the opportunity to finish above .

500 out of reach, there remains the option to open the mystery box that is Trey Lance. For Jerry Jones, he doesn’t want anyone to know — particularly the Commanders — what his team might do in Week 18. “You know, we’re obviously for, if you will, competitive reasons, we’re basically not saying until gameday,” the Cowboys owner and general manager said Friday on 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM) when asked if Rush was again set to start. If Rush plays in 55% of the Cowboys’ snaps on Sunday, he will earn a playing time incentive of $500,000. Rush has played in 52.3% of the snaps this season and would need to reach over 65 plays to hit the mark. So far, Rush has earned $250,000 of this incentive. The Cowboys’ offense averages 64.3 plays per game. Rush has averaged 65 snaps in the eight starts. During his interview, Jones downplayed the affect any money would have on whether Rush or any other player would ever take the field.“I’ve never minded paying a bonus out because that meant the team was doing better, or doing well because they were making a contribution that was possibly thought about when they made their contract.”The last time Lance started a regular season game he was getting carted off the field. In 2022, while playing for the 49ers, Lance started a Week 2 game against Seattle when he suffered a dislocated ankle in the first quarter

Rush's Contract Incentive Could Impact Cowboys' Starter in Season FinaleRush's Contract Incentive Could Impact Cowboys' Starter in Season FinaleA clause in Cooper Rush's contract could influence the Dallas Cowboys' starting quarterback decision for their season finale against Washington. Rush, who has started the last eight games for an injured Dak Prescott, could earn a $500,000 incentive if he plays in 55% of the snaps.
