FRISCO — The Cowboys are coming off a year at left guard in which Connor McGovern suffered a multi-week injury on the season’s opening drive, 40-year-old...
Within the organization, there has seemed a desire to allow him to focus and flourish at left tackle. But conceivably, he could start at guard with Tyron Smith at left tackle, Tyler Biadasz at center, Zack Martin at right guard and Terence Steele at right tackle.
Coach Mike McCarthy said Tuesday that Steele could miss the start of training camp. The fourth-year lineman underwent December knee surgery after suffering tears to his left ACL, MCL and MPFL.“Being elite at both is going to help the team the most,” Smith said “That’s what I’m focused on. … You’ve got to take shorter steps [at guard]. You’ve got to be more vertical with some steps. In pass sets, you don’t kick as far. You’ve got to have quicker hands. Little nuances like that.
Edoga has previous left guard experience, having started a game there in 2022 for the Atlanta Falcons.Waletzko is learning on the fly. The process is facilitated with a slower tempo that coach Mike McCarthy enacted this spring. Waletzko called the action at guard “a lot quicker” than at tackle. “When you’ve got a 3-technique, he’s right on you,” Waletzko said. “At tackle, obviously, you’ve got a lot more time in space. At guard, I kind of like that — I’ve got long arms. I’m out of my stance, and I’m immediately at least flashing my hand at the guy, and I’m already touching him, which is my big advantage because if he swipes, I can replace it, and I’m still in a good distance from him to recover.
