Dak Prescott hasn’t lost to the New York Giants since his rookie season. But when you discuss the quarterback’s career, when you point to his successes in...
Logan Ryan applied the hit to Prescott that October afternoon at AT&T Stadium, resulting in a right ankle compound fracture and dislocation. The quarterback’s season was done less than five games into the 2020 season.
A short time after the injury, Prescott received a copy of Relentless along with Bryant’s book, The Mamba Mentality. They were sent by Ryan, who had read both after breaking his fibula two years earlier. The Giants safety told Prescott he hoped they would help.“It gave me answers about myself,’’ Prescott said. “Things I’ve always, not wondered, but am I going to drive myself crazy, trying to do this, trying to do that? “Then, so many chapters in that book explained, no, you’re a cleaner. You’re never satisfied, even with your best. You’re psycho about it.“I don’t know. It’s weird. Sometimes I don’t think I’d ever be happy or have something happy from it , but it’s part of it.’’Dak Prescott turns 30: How the Cowboys QB’s leadership, drive is as apparent as ever Grover has a BS and MS in kinesiology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He’s the owner of Attack Athletics and a motivational speaker. In his book, he writes about coolers, closers and cleaners. You can excel in the first two categories. You might even be considered great at what you do.Cleaners want more. They possess a relentless, instinctive drive to do whatever it takes to get to the top and stay there. That’s why every time Jordan won a championship with the Bulls, he held up one finger more than the titles he had won.Grover writes a cleaner’s attitude can be summed up in three words: I own this. It comes with a dark side. You don’t just want this particular win. You want to win everything. It becomes an addiction.“That’s huge, right,’’ Prescott said. “You’ve got to have that dark side. That’s what makes you who you are. The more you take that away, you’re going to take away who you are.’’ If you don’t want to be the best at what you do, what the hell are you doing? Prescott had adopted that attitude long before the injury. But he sometimes wondered if his drive made it impossible to live a healthy, happy life.throughout his Cowboys career. He began to accept how he’s wired after reading Grover’s book. “Yeah, for sure,’’ Prescott said. “That’s why I say the answers. I was wondering that. Was I too obsessive, you know what I mean? “Damn, people talk about balance. How do I find a balance? Then you read the book and it’s like if you want to be great there is no balance. “Your balance is taking a little break, but you can’t compare that to someone else saying, ‘Oh, I’m trying to balance my work and my kids.’ My balance is different.Ryan won’t be on the field when the Cowboys open the regular season Sunday night. He’s no longer with the Giants. But that book had an impact on Prescott’s approach and by extension, this game.Catch David Moore on The Ticket with the Musers at 9:35 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the Hardline at 4:35 p.m. every Tuesday and Friday during Cowboys season
