“Well, because of the reps," McCarthy said. “We’re not just going to hit a bump and give up on the path.The Cowboys cut Elliott in March because his high salary ran counter to his declining production and the reduced role they envisioned for him going forward. The club never asked the third leading rusher in franchise history to take a significant pay cut to stay because they considered it insulting.Tony Pollard will be the featured back this season with a committee behind him.
“I think like anything in this business, especially when you have relationships that are long and been mutually beneficial, there is a personal component to this," McCarthy said. “Personally, it wasn’t easy for anybody. But when you make a commitment to young players, it’s the big picture. It’s the overall roster and development and how the room is going to look.
“It’s great to have two No. 1 running backs in your room. We clearly benefitted particularly from it in ‘21 and ‘22. I felt like we used those guys. I think our attempts and ball distribution reflected that.“But this is about the bigger picture," McCarthy continued. “It goes well beyond the running back room. How you fit it together. There is a financial projection that is involved in a lot of these decisions.
