The Dallas Cowboys secured their first sub-.500 season since 2020 with a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Coach Mike McCarthy might give Trey Lance a start in the regular season finale against Washington.
Dallas Cowboys wide receiver KaVontae Turpin is upended during the first half of an NFL football game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2024, in Philadelphia. After the first quarter of Sunday’s Cowboys - Eagles game, the team from Dallas had eight first downs, 117 total offensive yards and nearly 12 minutes of time of possession. It was an ugly start to a game that clinched the Cowboys ’ first sub-.500 season since 2020.
The best the Cowboys can do now is finish 8-9 if they defeat Washington in the regular season finale. As for what happened Sunday, the only suspense in the second half was how close Eagles running back Saquon Barkley would get to the single-season rushing record and if Rico Dowdle could reach 1,000 yards. This also was another example of how two trades, for Andrew Booth and for Jonathan Mingo, haven’t helped the Cowboys. KaVontae Turpin was eventually benched in the second half for Troy Pride Jr., who was signed to the practice squad Dec. 4. Anyway, the NFC East will have a new champion in the Eagles. This division has not seen a repeat champion since 2003-04 when the Eagles did it. Cooper Rush threw two interceptions and finished his day 15 of 28 for 147 yards passing with a touchdown, it might be time for Trey Lance. Of course, the Cowboys won’t answer questions about if Lance will start the regular season finale against Washington next weekend. The decision to start Lance, who got some playing time late in the fourth quarter, won’t occur until late Monday afternoon when coach Mike McCarthy has to put the game plan together. The Cowboys need to give Lance at least one start, and against Washington is the perfect time. It’s nothing against Rush, who went 4-4 as a starter with Dak Prescott out for the season. But at some point, you have to know what you got in Lance. Dallas knows what Rush is all about. He enters free agency with the expectations of returning to the Cowboys. Lance? Let’s find out
