Who could have a breakout season for the Cowboys in 2023? jfmckessy says to keep an eye on TE Jake Feguson. DallasCowboys
When it comes to a potential breakout candidate for the Dallas Cowboys, the answer seems obvious when looking at their current roster and depth chart:The Cowboys already have seen excellent performances from some key players in their rookie seasons—namely linebacker Micah Parsons and left tackle Tyler Smith. The team also enjoyed the success of a breakout season from running back Tony Pollard in an expanded role in 2022.
What makes Ferguson’s breakout feel so likely is the increased role he’s bound to have now that last year’s starting tight end, Dalton Schultz, is. Though the Cowboys drafted former Michigan tight end Luke Schoonmaker to help fill the hole Schultz left behind, it’s Ferguson who’s more familiar with the coaching staff and Dallas offense. For right now, Ferguson is the top tight end for the Cowboys, and he’ll get a great chance to take that role and run with it in 2023.
It’s not just Schultz’s departure that makes Ferguson a likely breakout candidate, though that is a part of it, but the former Wisconsin Badger is a strong tight end himself. Though he didn’t get a lot of chances to show it last year, one of Ferguson’s greatest attributes is his hands. The tight end pulled in 19 of his 22 targets during his rookie season and didn’t record a single drop.
Aside from the upside the second-year tight end brings with his traits and tools, he’s also a part of an offense with a quarterback in Dak Prescott and offensive play-caller in Mike McCarthy that like to get tight ends involved. Schultz was Prescott’s second-most targeted pass-catcher just last season, and it’s easy to see Ferguson taking a significant share of those targets as the leading tight end in 2023.
As we start to look toward the 2023 season, everything is moving in the right direction for Ferguson to step up and break out in his second season as a pro. He has all of the tools to be a successful pass-catcher from the position at the next level, he is the new TE1 on the team, and he’s part of an offense that will no doubt continue to use tight ends as a big part of its passing attack.
