These days and nights, with my wife Beth of 65 years in long-term care since January, my sole companion is a young cat named Miracle. And those of you who've met this barn kitten in these pages may recall how she got that name. How, two years ago, she'd appeared at our door and, sensing that our six offspring had grown and flown, adopted us--and won our hearts?
That's when I started calling her just plain Kitty. Later I shortened it to Kiki. She seems to like it. Couple weeks ago, spotting her white-and-tan self down by the road and worried about cars, I tested her with “Come, Kiki!” Instantly she came, leaping and bounding! So Kiki it is from now on. Confession: as a kid I liked cats less than dogs, of which my trapper dad had three. Dogs just seemed friendlier. I now know better. Cats are equally loving; they're just don't flaunt it. Also, unlike dogs they don't run in packs, but are family-based like lions and humans. But looking back, I suspect my indifference mostly stemmed from Mom, a light sleeper who hated the midnight yowling of love-sick toms and expected me to scare them off.
That won't happen to Kiki. She has the run of our downstairs, including the basement--whose door I keep ajar so she can avoid strangers and maybe catch mice. Our only downstairs no-no spots are the table tops. Sure, cats are clean; but they DO use their paws to cover poop. And you don't want them eating your breakfast while you take a phone call.
